Garfield 4; Rootstown 3 @ Garfield Thursday 9/18/14. Rootstown scored 1:56 into the game. Garfield tied it when freshman Zach Gorby headed a Rootstown goal kick to senior Noah Reider in stride with 24:26 left in the half. Rootstown took the lead back less than four minutes later on a free kick that hit the cross bar and bounced down into the goal. (20:48 left in the half). Rootstown then made it 3 to 1 with 9:51 left in the 1st half. 3 to 1 Rootstown at the half. With 35:49 left in the game, Zach Gorby was taken down in the box awarding the G-Men a Penalty Kick. Noah Reider kicked it in to close the gap to 3 to 2. It looked like Garfield tied the game with 24:15 left when senior Mason Maddox hit a shot from the 18 yard line and it hit the cross bar and bounced down reminiscent of England in the 2010 World Cup... and just like that game it wasn't ruled a goal. Garfield 6; Middlefield Cardinal 0 @ Garfield. Monday, 9/15/14.The game started off with Garfield dominating possession, but couldn’t finish. Finally Ante Dejanovic scored on a pass from Noah Reider. Then Mason Maddox sent a low corner kick that Noah Reider “dummied” and Ante kicked it into the goal on the near post side for a 2 to 0 lead. Noah Reider rounded out the scoring of the first half with a nifty juke move after receiving a pass from Ante Dejanovic. The second half featured three goals by Noah Redier. The first was assisted by Ante Dejanovic, the second by Zach Gorby and the last goal of the game was assisted by Isaac Cumberledge making the final score 6 to 0. Garfield 3; Southeast 2 @ Garfield. Thursday, 9/11/14. The winner of the game would be in sole possession of 2nd place in the P.T.C. County division. Southeast scored first on a backside goal by Ethan Bishop. Garfield scored when senior Noah Reider was assisted by senior Ante Dejanovic to tie the game 1 to 1 at the half. Garfield scored their first goal of the 2nd half when senior Mason Maddox sent a corner kick into the box that senior Zsad Lenart headed in. Then Ante Dejanovic sent a free kick to Noah Reider that he finished off for a 3 to 1 lead. Southeast senior Colton Harsh rounded out the scoring when he sent a left-footed shot into the net from the top of the box to make the final 3 to 2. Southeast drops to 3rd place and has not won in it’s last four games after starting off 4-0. Garfield 9; Streetsboro 1 @ Streetsboro. The Garfield boys' played their second road game of the season at Streetsboro on Tuesday 9/02/14. The G-Men scored first when seniors Mason Maddox and Noah Reider teamed up to get the ball to senior Ante Dejanovic, who made a nice shot with 37:51 left in the 1st half. Streetsboro tied the score on a chip shot with 32:54 left in the half. The G-Men got rolling with 24:32 left in the first half when Mason Maddox sent a through ball to Noah Reider and he drilled the shot from the top of the box. Less than three minutes later Ante Dejanovic scored on a cross from freshman Zach Gorby and it was 3 to 1 with 21:36 left in the first half. Then at the 18:52 mark, Zach Gorby scored a left-footed goal on a throw-in from Noah Reider.  Mason Maddox then sent a beautiful Corner Kick into the box that senior Chad Curry headed into the goal with 11:39 left in the half. Garfield 2; Labrae 3 @ Garfield. Saturday, 8/30/14. Labrae scored first when they sent a nice Corner Kick into the box that Mike Stassinis headed into the goal. Garfield tied the score before half when senior Ante Dejanovic converted a Penalty Kick because of a Labrae hand-ball in the box.  In the 2nd half Garfield took the lead when Zach Gorby sent a Corner Kick across the box that Issac Cumberledge put into the corner of the goal. Then Jason Downey made a nice chip shot goal to tie the game at 2. Disaster struck with about a minute left in the game when Labrae was awarded a Free Kick. The kick was sent forward and a Garfield player accidentally kicked it into their own net for an OWN goal and the game winner.  Garfield's record falls to 2-1-1 overall. Garfield 4; Rootstown 2 @ Rootstown. The Garfield boys' played their first road game of the season at Rootstown on Tuesday 8/26/14. The G-Men scored first when seniors Craig Jones and Noah Reider teamed up to get the ball to junior Kallen Kurtz, who made a nice shot from a tough angle with 23:26 left in the 1st half. Less than three minutes later freshman Zach Gorby passed to Noah Reider who buried the shot from the top of the box for a 2 to 0 lead, which is how the 1st half ended. The 2nd half started out looking bad for Garfield as they gave up a goal less than five minutes in, then got called for a foul in the box less than two minutes later, awarding Rootstown a penalty kick. This tied the game at 2 with 33:20 left, but it seemed to wake the G-Men up as they dominated the rest of the game. They took the lead for good when Zach Gorby assisted Noah Reider with 23:22 left. Garfield 1; Newton Falls 1 @ Garfield. Saturday, 8/23/14. The game started out looking like Garfield would run away with it. They were dominating possession and shots on goal, although the Newton Falls goalie was saving everything that came his way. Garfield finally scored when senior Noah Reider assisted senior Ante Dejanovic with about 28 minutes left in the first half. The lead was short lived though because Garfield got called for a foul on the outside edge of the box near the corner, and Newton Falls was awarded a Penalty kick in which they converted to tie the game 1 to 1. That turned out to be the final score, as Garfield rattled shots off of the posts and had many near misses. Garfield put 17 shots on goal to Newton Falls four, but they couldn't find the back of the net. Garfield also had an advantage on corner kicks, taking four to Newton Falls one. Garfield 3; Waterloo 1. @ Garfield. Opening game of the season for the boys' Varsity soccer team was on Thursday 8/21/14. With 29 minutes left in the 1st half, freshman Zach Gorby sent a corner kick into the box that senior Ante Dejanovic drilled into the back of the net for a 1 to 0 lead.With 19 minutes left in the 1st half junior Max McGrew made a beautiful pass to senior Noah Reider who scored to make it 2 to 0. Then with 9:48 left in the 1st half, senior Craig Jones passed to Ante who scored to make it 3 to 0 at the half. The 2nd half was scoreless until Waterloo scored with 1:50 left in the game to ruin the shutout. Garfield took 17 shots to Waterloo's five. Senior Nick Crawford made four saves in goal. Garfield had a 6 to 2 advantage on corner kicks. Garfield is also the 2013 PTC Champions after winning the league for the first time in school history last fall with a 9-1 league record and 14-1-1 regular season record. The boys varsity golf team placed 10th out of 16 teams at the Lake Center Christian Tiger Invitational. The boys shot a 370. Marcus Miller paced the boys with a 84 stroke performance. Eric Eirmann(91), Derek Miller(92), Nick Ensinger (96) and Scott Stanley (99) rounded out the day for the G-MEN.
