Garfield beats Southeast to stay unbeaten in PTC County boys soccer
Record-Courier staff report Published: Record-Courier staff report Garfield parlayed a first-half goal by Isaac Cumberledge and stellar team defense into a 1-0 victory over host Southeast in a battle for first place in Portage Trail Conference County Division boys soccer action on Thursday. The G-Men improved to 9-0-0 overall and 5-0-0 in the league, while the Pirates suffered their first league loss and are at 3-1-0 and 4-2-1 overall. Cumberledge scored off a tap from Ante Dejanovic following a free kick by Zach Hoffmann with 8:28 left in the first half, and the G-Men made it stand up. Garfield goalkeeper Nick Crawford made eight saves to post his third shutout of the season, and received plenty of help from a stingy G-Men defense led by Cooper Roubic, Hoffmann, Kyle Heim and Chad Curry. "(Roubic) was a monster on defense," said Garfield coach Michael Coney. "He probably played his best game of the year." The matchup also featured a battle in the midfield between Travis Gorby and Noah Reider of the G-Men and the Pirates' Colton Harsh, who have all played travel soccer together. In the G-Men's nine wins this season they've outscored opponents 36-7.RC online
